It's not easy to forget the city's involvement in the Civil War, for there are plenty of reminders as you walk around the city streets.
King Charles House is one of Worcester's most historic houses. It was from this house that King Charles made his escape through the back door closely pursued by Cromwell's forces to exile in France, after being defeated at the battle of Worcester in 1651.
Nowadays this historic building is a restaurant which serves superb British dishes and offers very good value for money. Luncheon meals served between 12.00 - 2.30pm. Dinner is served between 6:30pm-9:30pm.
The Restaurant boasts a dungeon on the ground floor. Judge William Berkeley was born in this building in 1684. It is told that he kept prisoners who were awaiting trial in the restaurant dungeon which was also know as a bottled dungeon built of tile about 8 inches square, closely laid upon each other dry, without any mortar. The method of building is similar to the steening used for well making purposes. The restaurant is also known for its many sightings of ghosts!
In the upstairs bar which is reputed to have been the King's bedchamber and where he held council to his officers, you may relax and enjoy a drink. Meals are only served on the ground floor of the restaurant with full silver service.
From the moment you walk into this ramshackle looking, slightly leaning black and white framed building you get a sense of its history...

After visiting the King Charles in May I discovered that the professional lunch club I founded 8 years ago had stopped running. I sent out a few emails and was delighted to find that there was still a demand from the professional community both for a lunch and for the King Charles. The first lunch was on June 15th and the team at King Charles did us proud. 45 excellent lunches all served reasonably quickly and with the minimum of fuss. The next lunch is in the diary and bookings are flowing in.

Very nice meal, portions very generous

We were welcomed by two friendly members of staff who asked us to go upstairs into their lounge area. We were given menus and asked if we would like a drink while we mulled the menu over and made our choices.
The food was good quality, fresh and above all else, tasty! The staff were friendly and very accommodating along with the atmosphere which was very welcoming.

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying the following evening meal:
Smoked Salmon, which was of gargantuan proportions, nonetheless, utterly mouth-watering. For the main course I chose the Prawns with steak - a type of surf and turf. It was sumptuous. It was a truly unforgettable meal. Sadly I couldn't manage a dessert. However, a wide range of mouth-watering sweets are available from a good old fashioned dessert trolley.
The King Charles is certainly worth a visit. However, I recommend that you pre-book a table, and one is rarely lucky enough to get a table on spec!

This restaurant is a little tucked away on the street - but the decor and furnishings are very classic and regal. The food portions were big but just what you would want from a Christmas menu - we all had a great time - amazing food and great service! Would definitely go again.
